Million Solar Roofs - A Federal Initiative

The Million Solar Roofs Initiative (MSRI) was announced in June of 1997. The goal of the initiative is to install one million solar energy systems in the U.S. by 2010. The initiative includes two types of solar technology: solar electric systems (photovoltaics - PV) that produce electricity from sunlight and solar thermal that produce heat for domestic hot water, space heating, or heating swimming pools.

The Million Solar Roofs Initiative is:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas and other emissions
  • Creating high-tech jobs
  • Keeping the U.S. solar industry competitive
To achieve the goal of a million solar roofs, the U.S. Department of Energy is working with local partners in the building industry, other federal agencies, local and state governments, utilities, energy service providers, the solar energy industry, financial institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Efforts of the partners are directed at removing market barriers to solar energy use, developing and strengthening local demand for solar energy products and applications, and creating sustainable solar energy markets.
