Local Partnership - Island of Hawaii

The Island of Hawaii MSRI Partnership, led by the Hawaii Electric Light Company, became one of the first MSRI partnerships in the nation, and in October of 1997 submitted to the United States Department of Energy a letter of intent to participate. On January 29, 1998 the Partnership received official recognition of its participation in the program from the Secretary of Energy.

The Island of Hawaii MSRI Partnership is a collaboration of local organizations and businesses committed to helping the Island of Hawaii achieve the goal of installing 20,000 solar systems by the year 2010. To accomplish this, the Partnership works to overcome barriers, and promotes the wide-scale adoption of solar water heating and solar electric systems on the Island of Hawaii. To assist in this effort the Partnership applied for and received a MSRI grant to:

  • Develop this Hawaii MSRI Web site as a source for information about the MSRI and the Island of Hawaii MSRI Partnership, and about solar energy itself
  • Develop preferred financing resources for solar projects
  • Address county permitting barriers to the use of PV systems
  • Identify effective non-price marketing issues
The Hawaii MSRI goal of 20,000 solar installations on the Big Island is an ambitious one, more ambitious than the goals set by some states. But our location at the edge of the tropics provides for an abundant solar resource and makes solar energy a natural for us. Solar energy often makes financial sense for homeowners and businesses alike, and the environmental benefits make winners of us all. With the help of the Island of Hawaii MSRI Partnership, U.S. DOE, and island residents and businesses, we will achieve our goal.
